‘Promoting the truck driver as a well-respected, well-compensated career’: TCA’s Jim Ward talks regulatory policies, improving the driver job, and much more with NTI

Jim Ward’s trucking career has touched four different decades, including a long stint as president and CEO of the 300-truck DM Bowman and Chair of the Board of the Truckload Carriers Association, an elected position held by trucking company leaders who help steer TCA’s policies and programs.

After his term as Chair, Ward joined TCA full time as the Association’s president in early 2022, where he now leverages his extensive trucking background, his wide network of relationships, and the depth of his industry knowledge to pilot the work TCA does in working on behalf of its member companies.

NTI’s Leah Shaver talked one on one with Ward last week on the Taking the Hire Road Show on FreightWaves, where the two discussed what TCA carrier members are saying are their top issues and priorities currently, what regulatory and policy changes TCA is working on at the state and federal level, Ward’s outlook for trucking changes that will take place in the coming years, and how the industry can grow interest in trucking careers in younger generations.

One of the most important factors of TCA’s work in the industry, said Ward, is improving the driver job by working with both industry and regulators to solve some of the biggest frustrations facing drivers on the road.
